Story
Rahman (Ram) and his sister Sania (Anjali) relocate to Bheemaraja Puram in search of work after they lose their house to Marwadis in legal battle. Rahman uncle Narayana (M S Narayana) was able to find him a job at Balaramudu (Venkatesh) palace by faking him as Hindu and name Ram. Here we need little introduction about our Balaramudu. He is a powerful man in the village, good at heart and allergic to liars. Balaramudu has passion for English speaking and massacres people every time he opens his mouth. Rahman leads his life happily at the palace with a decent salary with his fake identity.
The story gets a spin when Rahman (Ram for Balaramudu) is spotted by Balaramudu performing Namaaz at a mosque during Ramadan month. To come out of the trouble, Rahman cooks up another story about having a half-brother Raheem (Ram), who is gay and a dancer. Now, Balaramudu wants to utilize Ram services to teach dancing lessons to his sister Meenakshi ( Shahazan Padamsee).
Rahman manages to portray dual role at palace by concocting more lies. How long our hero succeeds and what happens once his real identity is revealed? To know these answers watch the climax…
Performance
Balaramudu is a powerful man of the village with little buffoonery touch with English. Venkatesh neither looked powerful nor buffoonery. His English was interesting initially but jaded out with time.
Ram is hilarious in Gay role while routine in Rahman role. Audience expect lot more energy from him in dances and action. Unfortunately, Ram disappoints you in these categories.
Anjali is good in sympathetic role. But, she needs to cut down her flab to continue as heroine. Shahzaan Padamsee is waste and doesn’t offer anything.
MS Narayana, Ali and Jayaprakash Reddy are adequate to their roles. Kovai Sarala acted well in two shades as Chintamani and mother. Posani is wasted.
Technical
Director Vijaya Bhaskar who is known for directing hilarious family entertainers lost his touch after Malleshwari. None of his films in recent past fared well at box office. He tried to break the jinx with this masala pot boiler which is a Xerox of Hindi film ‘Bol Bachchan’. Director feared to put his brain into it copied scene by scene making it mediocre to watch.
S S Thaman music and BG is cacophonous. Action by Ram Laxman is worst. The fight scene starts at palace and tours all streets in town before ending in palace. Anil Ravipudi dialogues are good. Cinematography is average.

Analysis
It is unfair if we say ‘Masala’ is remake of ‘Bol Bachchan’. It is more than a remake. Director copied scene to scene and even used some footage from the Hindi film. ‘Masala’ story is very feeble and the screenplay also runs on predictable note offering nothing new. We have seen many movies in the past with protagonist outwitting others with fake identity or cooking up stories to cover him up.
Except few hilarious moments here and there, it will not give you wholesome entertainment. The movie may appeal to those who like comedy in whatever form and even it is forced. On the whole, the movie ‘Masala’ is dispensable.
