Modinumber1: Sabarmati River Front vs Yamuna River Front

The following comment from Sheila Dikshit on recent movement on people asking about Yamuna River Development project which inspired me to write about improvement of the Yamuna River Front and Sabarmati River Front in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The comment from Sheila Dikshit: “People come on streets and talk about developments in states and cities only during election.” But Mrs. Sheila Dikshit, you are not even working on these development projects during elections.

Let me start with the Sabarmati River Front Project.
About Sabarmati River Front Project:
The work on Sabarmati Riverfront project started in early 2005 and it was expected to be completed by November, 2012.
This project is,
·         An environmental improvement
·         Social Upliftment
·         Urban Rejuvenation, which visualized renewing Ahmedabad.
Sabarmati River Front Development
It aims,
·         To regain the private river edge as a public asset and
·         Rebuilt the city’s relationship with its river
After careful analysis of the history of Sabarmati River Flow (Which is north to south), designers proposed the architectural details of development of both the banks of the Sabarmati River, which involves:
·         River Dredging
·         Constructing Retaining Walls
·         Providing Storm Water Outfalls
·         Ghats and Jetties
·         Reclaiming of around 200 Hectares
·         Providing Interceptor Sewers
·         Creating Parks and Gardens
·         Designing New Streets and Promenades with better Street Lighting
·         Housing for urban poor
Sabarmati River Front Development
Of the approximately 200 hectares of the total reclaimed land,
·         46 Hectares is to be used for roads
·         15 Hectares for rehabilitation and resettlement
·         22 Hectares for commercial development
·         13 Hectares for residential development
·         40 Hectares for parks and gardens
·         Remaining land will be allocated for public utilities and amenities
The project also includes,
·         Water management system to clean up the Sabarmati water with New Sewage Treatment infrastructure.
·         Providing interceptor sewer lines along both banks of the river to divert sewage to other 2 sewage treatment plants in Ahmedabad.
Water Amusement rides, including speed boats and motor boats, are available between Nehru Bridge and Gandhi Bridge.
Sabarmati River Front is open since 15th August 2012 (Development work started in 2005). Development work was completed 2 months before the due date.
Why So Late? Due to concerns regarding,
·         Water level
·         Flooding
·         Rehabilitation of displaced slum dwellers
·         Problem with designs (Average width of 1253 ft and its narrowest cross-section is 1080 ft)
How much money has been spent to develop Sabarmati River Front?
·         Rs. 12,000 Crore
How long is the Sabarmati River Front?
·         10.4 Kilometers
It has been awarded,
·         As one of the 100 most innovative global infrastructure projects that make cities livable and sustainable by KPMG for Urban Regeneration in Ahmedabad.
Sabarmati River Front is one of many finest works done by Government of Gujarat under leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi.
About Yamuna River Front Project:
The work on Yamuna Riverfront project started in 2006 and it was expected to be completed by November, 2010.
This project is,
·         An environmental improvement
·         Social Upliftment
·         Urban Rejuvenation, which visualized renewing Delhi
What is the Status of Yamuna River Front Project?
·         God Knows. There is not a single thing done on Yamuna River to make the river front.
How much money has been spent to develop Yamuna River Front?
·         Rs. 80,000 Crore (More than 6 times the amount used on the Sabarmati River Front)
Yamuna River Front Development Project
How long is the Yamuna River Front?
·         Around 20 Kilometers
It is now a question for Sheila Dikshit about the money that has been spent on the project and where the money has been spent.
