HYDERABAD: Tragedy struck the city on the eve of the holy month of Ramzan when a hotel on RP road in Secunderabad collapsed all of a sudden on early Monday morning, killing 13 persons. While many survivors
have been rushed to the hospital, quite a few people were trapped under
the debris. Civic authorities are on a rescue operation to help them as
early as possible.
The mishap occurred at City Light India Hotel, located on Ghasmandi Crossroad on RP road in Secunderabad, a popular Irani hotel, famous for its tea and other items. All of a sudden, at around 6.20am, the building simply collapsed, burying all its occupants; mainly customers and hotel workers.
Apparently, with the dish Haleem much in demand during the holy month of Ramzan which is slated to begin, the hotel authorities had stored a large number of massive metal utensils in which the dish consisting of goat meat, wheat and ghee is made. That probably led to the foundation giving away, said authorities of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
According to sources, the building is at least 80 years old, and locals claimed that it was unsafe for habitation and should have been sealed by the civic authorities. GHMC officials, however, said the building did not figure in their list of unsafe structures in Secunderabad.
At least 37 persons were rushed to Gandhi Hospital, while the number of persons trapped in the debris is still not known. With the incident having taken place at a busy intersection, a large crowd gathered there, triggering the closure of the road, as well as a lathicharge by the police to clear away the curious crowd.
Civic officials said they hoped to rescue all the trapped people before daylight ends today.
