Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Review

Undoubtedly, July 19th is one of the biggest days in Shruthi Haasan’s life. She has not one but two important releases lined up in D-Day and Ramaiya Vastavaiya. While Shruthi has a small role in D Day, she is the main stay of Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Directed by Prabhu Deva, this film also marks the debut of Girish Kumar in Bollywood. The music is already a rage and the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Sona(Shruthi Haasan), the only sister of Raghu(Sonu Sood) is the heart of her brothers life. After the demise of Sona’s parents, Raghu takes up the responsibility of bringing up his only sister. He loves his sister to death and can do anything for her happiness.
One day Sona leaves her village to attend her best friend, Ria’s wedding in the city. There she meets Ria’s cousin Ram(Girish Kumar) a rich NRI from Australia. As time passes, closeness between Ram and Sona develops and the couple fall for each other.
When Ram’s mother comes to know her sons affair, she insults Sona and her brother badly and kicks them out of the wedding. A depressed Sona and angry Raghu return to theirvillage. Realizing his true love for Sona, Ram also reaches the village and begs Raghu for Sona’s hand.
An angry Raghu throws an open challenge to Ram and lays a condition that if he wins it, he would give away Sona’s hand to him. What is the challenge? Does Ram accept Raghu’s conditions and fight for his love. That forms the rest of the story.
Positive Points:
Shruthi haasan is the highlight of this light hearted film and looks gorgeous. She looks fresh and carries the role of a innocent village girl with ease. Shruthi’s emotions, simple dressing style and innocence will be liked by everyone.
For his debut film, Girish Kumar does a pretty decent job. Girish has done his homework and is well trained in all departments. He has a chiseled body and can dance and fight pretty well. Though he looks a bit raw in many scenes, he will surely mature in his upcoming films.
First half of the movie is highly entertaining. It has songs, romance and interesting comedy. Romantic scenes between Girish and Shruthi Haasan are executed well.
Chemistry between Shruthi Haasan and Girish Kumar is top notch. Sonu Sood is powerful in brother’s role and many reputed actors support the film pretty well.
Negative Points:
One can easily say that Ramiaya Vastavaiya is an old wine in new bottle. A typical rich guy falling in love with a poor girl and finally winning her heart at the end.
This film instantly reminds you of Salman Khan’s Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. Major portions in the second half are inspired from that film.
Climax is dragged out completely and takes for ever to finish. Though the film looks fresh its has the routine scenes between the lead pair. Though Sonu Sood has a powerful role he is limited in the second half.
Technical Aspects:
Music is the main stay of the film and carries the whole film on its shoulders. Sachin Jigar’s musical score is outstanding specially the three Atif Aslam songs. Background score is commendable as it elevates the entire love story.
Prabhu Deva, who also directed the original, does not experiment much with the remake. He sticks to the plot and makes it simple and lovable. He adds loads of entertainment and creates a beautiful love story.
The way he has handled the lead pair is very good. Screenplay is apt and holds the film together. Editing is neat and camerawork is pretty decent. The entire second half which is based in a village has been captured beautifully.
Verdict:
On the whole, Ramiaya Vastavaiya has a bit of everything. Innocent love story, peppy songs and great chemistry from the lead pair. On the flip side, an old stroy line and similarities with many films can spoil the fun to an extent. If you ignore the similarities and are a fan of light hearted romantic films, Ramaiya Vastavaiya can surely be given a shot.

Movie Rating: 3/5
