Punjab and Haryana HC stays release of Grand Masti

Punjab and Haryana high court stayed the release of Grand Masti, scheduled for release on September 13, in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on the grounds of vulgar dialogues and obscene content besides scenes that degrade women.

The high court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification, union ministry of information and broadcasting and Maruti International Films Private Limited, Mumbai, to file their replies on the allegations made in the petition by September 20.

The movie starring Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani and Manjari Fadnis is a sequel of the film, Masti, which was released in 2004.

The petition filed by advocate Dinesh Chadha came up for hearing before the court headed by justice Rameshwar Singh Malik on Tuesday.  The petitioner has sought directions to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to reconsider the certificate of exhibition granted to the movie and to stay the film’s release.

Chadha has submitted that the board had violated provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, by issuing the certificate on June 14 as the contents of the film were full of indecency and immorality.
The petitioner has also sought directions to CBFC not to certify films that contain such content that affects sensuality and encouraging incidents of crime against women in the country.
