Shiv Sena leader Datta Nalawade passes away

Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader Datta Nalawade died at a hospital here Friday after a prolonged illness, senior party leader Neelam Gorhe said.

Nalawade, 77, breathed his last at the Jaslok Hospital at 1.30 AM. He was suffering from respiratory problems since some time.  

He is survived by three daughters.

The last rites of Nalawade would be performed at a crematorium in Worli at 3 PM, Gorhe said.

Nalawade, during the Shiv Sena-BJP regime, was the Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1995-99.

He was also an MLA for four terms and was the Mayor of Mumbai for a year in 1986.

Sena supremo late Bal Thackeray had once referred to him as the "supporting pillar of Shiv Sena."
