Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will on Monday land in Mumbai, a day after addressing his first - and a mammoth - rally in Delhi in his new avatar.

Modi, who is not scheduled to address any rally in Mumbai, will land here at around 4 pm.

The Gujarat Chief Minister will drive down to inaugurate Mumbai Diamond Merchant Association’s Diamond Hall at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Bandra-Kurla Complex. According to reports, he is also scheduled to attend a function lined up with an industry association later in the evening.

This will be Modi’s first visit to Mumbai after he was declared as prime ministerial candidate.

The BJP hopes that projecting Modi will help them strengthen their core and auxiliary constituency.

BJP leaders said that Modi is likely to increase his engagement in Maharashtra keeping an eye on 2014 Lok Sabha polls and considering the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats which are next only to Uttar Pradesh.

MUMBAI: The rupee on Thursday strengthened further by 43 paise to trade at fresh three-week high of 62.95 against the dollar in early trade boosted by consistent capital inflows and dollar sales by exporters.

The domestic currency has spurted by 425 paise or 6.28 per cent in last five straight sessions.

The rupee had gained 46 paise to close at 63.38 yesterday against the dollar on the back of fresh RBI steps to boost foreign fund inflows and hopes of a diplomatic solution in Syria.

Mumbai: Following the arrest of all five accused in the Mumbai gang-rape case, the police have now launched a hunt for the mobile phone that was used to take pictures of the victim after she was sexually assaulted.

The 22-year-old photojournalist, working as an intern with an English magazine, was gang-raped in the premises of the defunct Shakti Mills compound where she had gone along with a male colleague on an official assignment to shoot pictures on August 22.

Reports quoted police as saying that the missing phone belonged to one of the accused Mohammed Kasim Hafiz Shaikh alias Kasim Bengali, 21, who has been described as "the most depraved" of the lot.

The police told a court yesterday that Bangali was not co-operating and has refused to disclose where he has hidden the phone. Bengali, a resident of Agripada in central Mumbai, is in police custody till August 30.

Other reports, meanwhile, said the phone belonged to Salim Ansari, who was arrested from Delhi by the Crime Branch sleuths yesterday. He is being brought to Mumbai and is expected to be produced before the court today for remand.

Reports said Ansari, who was arrested from Bharat Nagar in North-West Delhi, sold off the mobile phone in Delhi as he was running out of cash.

As per police, the accused had tied up the victim's colleague at a little distance away from the scene of the crime and gang-raped her after threatening her with a broken piece of a beer bottle which they placed near her neck. They shot pictures of the act and warned the victim not to disclose it to anyone or else the pictures would be circulated.

All five accused have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) such as 376(D) (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention).

MUMBAI: Gangster Abu Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, was on Thursday attacked inside Taloja Central Jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said.

According to police, Salem was shot by Devendra Jagtap, an accused in the advocate Shahid Azmi murder case.

Salem sustained injury to his hand as Jagtap fired one round.

This is the second attack on Salem inside a jail after he was deported from Portugal in 2005. He had faced attack at the Arthur Road jail here in 2010.

New Delhi: Heavy rains have struck Mumbai yet again.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mumbai experienced unrelenting rains which have thrown the city out of gear.

High tides of 4.93 meters are expected to hit the Mumbai coast today, says the MeT department. The people of Mumbai are being advised to stay away from the seas as the water level has risen.

Due to the rains, water shortage which was lingering on the city has been met with, which is a big relief for the Mumbaikars.

Earlier, the MeT department had warned of heavy rains in the coming days. The air traffic is also expected to be hit due to the heavy rains.

Mumbai had experienced heavy rainfall on June 17 which also caused two building collapses causing loss of life and property.

Bollywood actress Jiah Khan has been found dead at her home in the Indian city of Mumbai, police say.

They did not say how Khan died, but said they were seeking information from Khan's neighbours.

The 25-year-old actress made her debut in 2007 opposite Amitabh Bachchan, and went on to act with stars including Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Khan was born in New York and grew up in London before moving to Mumbai for a career in Bollywood.

Her death caused shock within the film industry.

Fellow actress Dia Mirza said on Twitter: "RIP Nafisa (Jiah) Khan. You were too young and beautiful…"

Bachchan also took to Twitter to react on his colleague's death: "WHAT ...!!! Jiah Khan? What has happened? Is this correct? Unbelievable!!!"

Khan acted in Nishabd, starring Bachchan, and the psychological thriller, Ghajini, which had Aamir Khan in the lead role.

Khan's last film was in the 2010 comedy Housefull, in which she played a supporting role.

Khan's official website says she was born in New York and brought up in London. It says she went to New York to study acting.

She also featured in an advert for the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader Datta Nalawade died at a hospital here Friday after a prolonged illness, senior party leader Neelam Gorhe said.

Nalawade, 77, breathed his last at the Jaslok Hospital at 1.30 AM. He was suffering from respiratory problems since some time.

He is survived by three daughters.

The last rites of Nalawade would be performed at a crematorium in Worli at 3 PM, Gorhe said.

Nalawade, during the Shiv Sena-BJP regime, was the Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1995-99.

He was also an MLA for four terms and was the Mayor of Mumbai for a year in 1986.

Sena supremo late Bal Thackeray had once referred to him as the "supporting pillar of Shiv Sena."
