20-year-old JNU student narrates her horror tale

NEW DELHI: Abhinandan Verma, who was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly harassing aJNU student, is the son of a Bihar Police officer. He had completed his graduation this year and was trying to get admission in a post-graduate course. Police said Verma and the girl knew each other. He was keen to have a relationship with her while she turned him down on Sunday. A case of molestation using criminal force and criminal intimidation under sections 354 and 506 of IPC has been registered at Vasant Kunj (north) police station.

Police said they were also verifying if the accused had been illegally staying on the campus after finishing his course. The 20 year-old victim told TOI that her ordeal began about a month ago. "I had met him in April this year. He was my friend and senior and helped me with my studies. But about a month ago, he started behaving very aggressively with me." "He'd come up and ask me to stand in front of him and ask me what I was doing. He would get furious if he found me with friends or in a meeting," she said. "I had to answer to him for every move I made, even if I just was going to the library. I was trying to move away as a lot of friends had warned me against him. He would drink and break bottles in his hostel," the girl said. Verma would call her up repeatedly at times, she alleged.

"On Sunday, he told me he wanted to speak to me for five minutes and that he was leaving JNU," the girl said. After initially refusing, she agreed after he persisted. "I came out of my hostel and we started walking. At first, he was speaking normally but then started getting angry. He asked why I did not speak to him and that I should be ready to face the consequences. He told me how he was going to ruin my life and would have me thrown out of JNU in a week."

He allegedly slapped her when they were near the administrative block. There were people in the park but they may not have seen it. I ran away but he came after me and grabbed me by my throat and held on for quite some time near the T-junction before the administrative block. Then he pushed me towards an oncoming vehicle but thankfully it missed me," she said. The accused allegedly left after a guard came up and said, "Aaram se baat karo (talk peacefully)." In the evening, the victim talked about the assault at a meeting held by JNU officials. The cops were immediately informed and a complaint was filed.
