According to initial reports, those killed in the incident were trying to cross the track when they were run over by the Rajya Rani Express near Saharsha-Khagaria route.
The incident infuriated the locals, who gheroed the nearby railway station and beat the railway staff there.
Top railway officials and city administration officials have been rushed to the mishap site.
It is still not clear as o what led to the mishap.
