Director Veera Bhadram, who directed couple of comedy genre flicks previously, gets the   opportunity to direct King Nag this time.  It’s been a while since King Nagarjuna has acted in a regular commercial movie. Post Ragada he seemed to have tried different genres but not the regular commercial format films. With his latest offering Bhai,  he returns to the regular  masala format, doing which once he ruled the roost back in 90’s.
Story:
Ruling mafia suffers a huge set back when an undercover cop starts eliminating key members of the gang one by one. Puzzled by the situation, the Don of the gang assigns the task of finding out and killing the undercover cop to his most trusted subordinate, Bhai. Once bhai gets in to the task, he finds out some shocking facts about the undercover cop which move him emotionally. What are those facts ? How do they connect to Bhai? And how does the mafia gets affected with this forms rest of the story.
Analysis:
Mafia and Don type of movies  are not new to us. We have been seeing these kind of movies since 70’s. The most important thing we love in these genre movies are the seriousness, a sense of fear in the mafia ambience and the edginess which usually prevails in that atmosphere. This Bhai severely lacks all of them. The underworld mafia set up, their mannerisms, dialogues and the way they carry themselves are shown very amateurishly and in an irksome way. The movie gets somewhat interesting half way through when the sentimental perspective of the plot gets revealed. Comedy scenes used to fill the gaps fail miserably to bring any laughs. With major twist of the plot getting revealed just few minutes before the intermission, the otherwise pathetic first half ends in a subdued way.
Second half starts with the flash back episode in which the sentimental scenes have worked to some extent. Movie gets slightly interesting by the time the flashback episode ends. Once the plot returns to the present, some interesting scenes follow one after the other and the plot gains momentum. Pre climax episode is best part of this movie but the climax offers nothing new and the movie ends in a routine way. Again in the second half, the songs and comedy which are used to fill the gaps in the plot test patience of the audience.
Performances:
Nagarjuna was good in sentimental scenes but the Bhai character did not suit him at all. It is sad to see such a senior hero being presented on screen in a mocking way. He should be careful in choosing roles going forward. Bhai character is not his cup of tea.
Though it was a short role, only noteworthy performance in this movie came from Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao. All others were strictly OK and need not deserve a special mention here.
Technical Departments:
Direction is good in parts but overall it’s a thumbs down effort from Veera Bhadram. He should have taken more care in presenting mafia scenes in a matured way. He definitely did not do his homework in the comedy department. The lesser we talk about the comedy in this movie is the better.
Songs by Devi Sri Prasad are hit but his background score is mediocre. One can hardly think of a scene which got elevated due to background score.
Cinematography is good. Production values are OK. Editing is fine. Dialogues in emotional scenes were good but certain one liners uttered by various  Mafia characters including Bhai are ridiculous.
Verdict:
This Bhai fails to entertain. Nagarjuna and Annapurna Studios would have done much better without  associating themselves with a flick like this. It’s just another sub-standard telugu movie which may appeal to hardcore Nagarjuna fans but it’s a strict no-no for those audience who come to theaters to watch good cinema.

Movie Rating: 2.5/5
