Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday won the vote of confidence motion in the state assembly.

The JMM-Congress alliance secured 43 votes while 37 voted against the motion.

The Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government was formed on July 13.

Soren was asked by Governor Syed Ahmad to prove his majority within a week. Consequently, a special assembly session was convened on Thursday.

In the 82-member House, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) had 42 members backing the motion as the High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition of JMM legislator Nalin Soren requesting for a stay on a non-bailable arrest warrant.

The non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against him by the special vigilance court in connection with the seed scam that surfaced when he was a state minister between 2006 and 2008.

JMM MLA Sita Soren, one of the two absconding legislators of the party, the other being Nalin Soren, was present in the House on Thursday after she was reportedly granted a bail by the Supreme Court in an abduction case related to the 2012 horse trading case during Rajya Sabha election.

Jharkhand Speaker C.P. Singh had earlier asked the Soren led JMM-Congress government having the support of Independents to table the vote of confidence.

Soren, who took oath as the head of the coalition government on July 13, had submitted a list of 43 supporting MLAs in the 82-member House to Governor Syed Ahmed on July 9 and had been asked to take the confidence vote after being sworn in.

Singh told the House that there were bitter-sweet memories in the 13-year-old history of Jharkhand and there was scope for making many experiments in democracy, but it should reflect noteworthy results.

RANCHI: Congress on Friday said it will join the new Jharkhand government to be formed under the leadership of JMM leader Hemant Soren.

"On the advice of our national leadership, PCC president Sukdhdeo Bhagat announced that Congress legislature party leader Rajendra Prasad Singh would take oath as a minister in the event of governor Syed Ahmed inviting JMM leader Hemant Soren to take oath as the chief minister tomorrow," PCC spokesman Sailesh Kumar Sinha told reporters here.

Raj Bhavan is waiting for a formal communication from the Centre after the Union cabinet on Thursday recommended revocation of President's rule in the state. Soren staked claim on July 9 to form government with the support of 43 MLAs in the 82-member house.

"The RJD has already announced its willingness to join the government. Our legislature party leader Annapurna Devi has been cleared by the party leadership to take oath as and when the governor invites Soren for the swearing-in ceremony," RJD's state unit spokesman Manoj Kumar said.

As of now, JMM-LP leader Hemant Soren, who is set to head the ninth coalition government in Jharkhand, would expand the ministry apparently after the floor test, sources in the JMM said.

As per the constitutional provision, Jharkhand can have a maximum of 12 ministers.
