CHENNAI: A 65-year-old man died on Thursday after his drunk son poured acid into his mouth while he was asleep in their house in Pattabiram on Sunday. Police later arrested the son.
Pattabiram police inspector M G Sundar said E David, a retired employee of Ordinance Clothing Factory, had three daughters and three sons. His third son Anthony, 39, was unemployed. An alcoholic, he used to harass his father for money.
On Saturday, he had a tiff with his father. Family members and neighbours intervened and stopped the quarrel.
On Sunday morning, when his mother had gone to buy milk, Sundar poured acid, kept in the bathroom for cleaning the floor, into his father's mouth and fled. Hearing David's cries, neighbors rushed him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
Doctors at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital said David was brought in a critical condition and was admitted to the intensive care unit.
"His internal organs had suffered severe damage and he did not respond to treatment and died shortly," said a doctor.
Anthony was nabbed in a drunken state in Avadi on Thursday afternoon and charged with murder.
The Pattabiram police registered a case and remanded him in judicial custody.
Police said Anthony used to do odd jobs and was known to keep company with people with a criminal background.
